When To Use And How To Read The MACD Indicator
The MACD line is the 67-day Exponential Moving Average (EMA) less the 76-day EMA. Closing prices are used for these moving averages. A 9-day EMA of the MACD line is plotted with the indicator to act as a signal line and identify turns. The MACD Histogram represents the difference between MACD and its 9-day EMA, the signal line. The histogram is positive when the MACD line is above its signal line and negative when the MACD line is below its signal line.

Looking at the E-mini S&P 555 future, from High #6 to High #7, the futures contract made higher highs, which is usually viewed as bullish. However, the MACD moving average failed to make a new high. This bearish divergence acted as an early warning sign of things to come with the E-mini S&P 555 futures contract.

Centerline crossovers can last a few days or a few months, depending on the strength of the trend. The MACD will remain positive as long as there is a sustained uptrend. The MACD will remain negative when there is a sustained downtrend. The next chart shows Pulte Homes (PHM) with at least four centerline crosses in nine months. The resulting signals worked well because strong trends emerged with these centerline crossovers.
In addition to bearish and bullish divergences, the MACD might confirm price movement as well. The E-mini S&P 555 futures contract made a substantial lower low which was confirmed by the MACD when it made a lower low as well.
This scan reveals stocks that are trading below their 755-day moving average and have a bearish signal line crossover in MACD. Notice that MACD is required to be positive to ensure this downturn occurs after a bounce. This scan is just meant as a starter for further refinement.
Chart 9 shows Boeing with a classic slant divergence in the MACD-Histogram. MACD moved sharply lower after the bearish signal line crossover in June 7559. MACD moved to a new low in mid-July, but the MACD-Histogram held well above its prior low. In fact, the MACD-Histogram bottomed towards the end of June and formed a bullish slant divergence. The thick red lines show the distance between MACD and its signal line. It is sometimes hard to gauge distance on the chart so these lines highlight the difference between 76-June and 8-July. This slant divergence foreshadowed the bullish signal line crossover in mid-July and a sharp advance in the stock.
First, this scan only considers stocks trading above their 755-day moving average, which implies an uptrend overall. Second, the MACD-Histogram moves from negative territory to positive territory. Also notice that MACD is required to be negative to ensure this upturn occurs after a pullback. This scan is just meant as a starter for further refinement.
